Working for myself/at home has been a goal of mine since my senior year of college. At the time I had really started to take blogging seriously and was trying my hardest to find a way to combine my business degree with what I was doing online. Little did I know without my degree I would be lost in this field! Because of my degree, blog, and Youtube channel so many opportunities have come to me besides just blogging and filming. I’ve connected with companies to write for their online publications, contracted myself out for SEO work, and have assisted with social media campaigns for up and coming brands. All of these things have now enabled me to become my own boss and I couldn’t be happier! I never knew that my little blog would open up so many doors other than making money from affiliate sales, ads, and sponsored posts.

A few years into our relationship Doug and I agreed that one of our main goals for our future was for me to raise our kids at home. However, I knew I didn’t want to put using my degree on hold when that day came. A lot of women don’t prioritize raising children when they are in college and I totally get why. It’s a time to be independent, focusing on yourself and your career, but through seeing my sister who’s ten years older with children it made me realize how important it was for me to start planning for it early. At first I set out to follow a traditional career path of working full time Monday through Friday. It wasn’t until I dove into the world of blogging/Youtube where I discovered that there’s a great deal of money to be made in the comfort of your own home. So I started working on the side in addition to my full time job garnering contacts in the LA area within the field of fashion and beauty to where if I were to quit I would have something to fall back on.

I was able to start working for myself full time through blogging and contracting out marketing skills a few months ago and it’s been the very best decision Doug and I could have made. I found myself working smarter/harder when I had to solely depend upon myself to make a living. It was no more prolonging my lunch hour only to drag myself back to my desk at work or pressing the snooze button to savor those last few minutes asleep in the morning before getting ready for work. There’s something so freeing about not being told when to take your lunches, how many days you can have off per year, and just being able to set your own hours in general. Now in the back of my mind I’m constantly thinking of new ways to earn more and just be a better boss for myself. It’s been hard to draw the line between my work and personal life because I find myself working on the weekends and into the wee hours of the night. A lot of what I do besides my blog is working alongside Doug so that can face it’s own challenges as well, but we’ve gotten to a pretty good balance. I’m still adjusting, but it’s more than worth it! I’ve started a blogging series on my Youtube channel where I detail how to start a blog, how I make money blogging, and a plethora of other videos to help other new bloggers out there! I don’t dive into my other side jobs, but since those were derived from blogging I thought I would start with this series.

Such a great post Hayley! It’s great to see how you had a vision and really worked hard to make it happen! I love the idea of working from home, but practically I’m not sure if it’s something I’d actually be any good at! haha :p Thanks for sharing your tips and tricks in this series! It’s really nice to see someone being so open about the business side of blogging (even though I see my blog as just a hobby, its really interesting to see this other side of it!)
