how-to-treat-color-treated-hair-1

I’ve mentioned before how damaged my hair has been in the past (see old hair picture here). From cutting it to my shoulders to bleaching my entire head, I’ve only recently found a routine that has helped me achieve longer, healthier hair. I would be lying if I said I don’t seriously consider which hair products I use on a daily basis. The one thing I stay serious about is how I treat my hair nowadays after all the trauma I’ve put it through. For years I wanted long, healthy hair and I thought that scheduling regular trims would maintain its healthiness and help it grow by not splitting the hair shaft. After finding my current hairstylist, she informed me that although regular trims are necessary for girls with longer hair, girls with short hair should just let it grow. For those of you wondering how to achieve long, color treated hair, here are a few tips I’ve learned.

1. Don’t cut your hair! Plain and simple. It seems silly stating the obvious, but the more you cut it, the shorter it becomes. Don’t give into the idea that cutting it prevents split ends and stimulates hair growth. Hair growth starts at the scalp, not the ends!

2. Don’t get layers! Next to number one, this is probably the most valuable lesson I’ve learned in growing out my hair. I always wanted natural, thick hair, from the root to the ends. Layers thin out the bottom ends of your hair and when natural split ends occur, (because they always will!) you’re left with dry, brittle ends that aren’t cute.

3. Wash your hair less. I know you hear this all the time, but after trying it for myself, I’ve become hooked! I’ve never been one of those “lazy” girls (and yes I use the term “lazy” because washing your hair does require a lot of time that no one wants to waste) who can go days without washing their hair simply because they don’t want to wash and dry it. The best feeling in the world for me is being as clean as possible and I always feel my best with freshly washed hair. However, when I was washing my hair everyday it never grew! That’s because the natural oils from my scalp weren’t hydrating my hair so it looked dry and brittle most of the time. I still have to wash it frequently because I just can’t go a long time without it, so I now wash it every other day and it has helped immensely, also this dry shampoo in the ‘wild’ scent is my savior (it smells soooo good!!).

4. Try not bleaching it. Although the ends of my hair are lightened a bit now, I’m planning on dying them brunette in a few weeks so by the time my wedding comes around next year, I’ll have healthier, thicker hair. Lightening your hair only creates breakage at the ends, but if you’re like me and get bored every few months with one dimensional hair, just give yourself some highlights with a partial weave so you don’t have to lighten it every month when it grows out a little.

5. Use hydrating hair products. For years I used whatever was at the drugstore and those products just didn’t moisturize my hair. I wanted shiny, silky hair and in order to get that I would have to round brush my hair for twenty minutes and apply a serum(that’s a lot of work). That’s why when I tried Pura D’or‘s Argan Oil hair products, it took the hassle out of everything and I wasn’t stripping my hair of its natural oil. I still apply a tiny bit of serum on the ends just because my hair is still recovering from some damage, but other than that, I have pretty shiny hair now. It’s amazing! My hair is nowhere where I want it to be completely, but its come such a long way to the picture I linked in the beginning of this post so I thought I would share what I’ve learned!

  7. This is super helpful! I actually *just* went to the hair salon for some major balayage action. I’m working on washing my hair less… I’m still figuring out how to style it when I’m 2 or 3 days in. Your hair looks beautiful, by the way!
